Prayers

Harpley

This then is how you should pray. "Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name..." Matthew 6.9

Prayer is not a mysterious practice reserved only for clergy and the religiously devout. Prayer is simply communicating with God—listening and talking to him. Believers can pray from the heart, freely, spontaneously, and in their own words.

God hears every prayer - but not all prayers are answered in the way we might expect or desire.

If you would like a prayer for someone; a prayer to be read out in Church at the next service, then please use the Contact Us form.

TO HELP YOU PRAY

Let the peace of this place surround you as you sit or kneel quietly. Let the hurry and worry of your life fall away from you. You are God’s child. He loves and cares for you. He is here with you now, and always. Speak to him slowly and thoughtfully. Give yourself time for him to bring things to mind.

God, I’m not sure how to be here or what I’m supposed to do or say. I do know that I’d like to get to know you. I feel somehow drawn to you – seeking, looking for you throughout each day. Hear me God, and forgive me my uncertainty. Take the desire of my heart, and show me the Way. Amen

Lord Jesus, Let me be still. Let the thoughts and worries of this day pass from my mind. Hush the noise that keeps me busy. Help me to simply sit here and think only of you. And in the stillness, to ponder your love and consider your presence with me and in me and around me, in all that I do, and in all that I am. Amen

Lord, Thank you for my family and friends, for the love and friendship we share. I’m sorry I don’t often find time to be with you, & for the times I’ve failed to help someone in need. Let me see your face and hear your word in those around me, and so be true in all my relationships, that I may show your love & generosity in the world. Amen

When you want to make a new start with God.

Dear Lord Please come into my life. Forgive me. Heal me.
And fill me with your Holy Spirit. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

When you want to say “Thank You” to God

Dear Lord I want to say thank you for what you’ve done for me. My heart is full of happiness and peace. Help me to learn that you always see me, always hear me, whatever life brings. Thank you for the joy I feel this day.  Amen

Lord Thank you for your presence here, for the opportunity to pray, and the promise of peace, for the beauty of the World, and the kindness of people, for all those whom I love, and those who love me, for your love towards me, for the Cross of Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit. Help me show my gratitude in deeds as well as words. Amen  (Mother Teresa)

When you are worried.

Dear Lord I am so anxious. My mind is full of worry and fear. Please be with me, calm me down, and help me to trust that you will take care of my future, through Jesus Christ Our Lord.  Amen

When you are unsure

Dear Lord I have a big decision to make and I don’t know what to do. I am afraid of doing the wrong thing. I need you to guide me. Please direct my thoughts and understanding. Please lead me the right way and give me peace about the next step I take. Through Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen

When you are concerned for someone who is ill.

Dear Lord There is someone I love who needs your healing touch. Please be near them, help them, and give them peace this day, through Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen

For when you are lonely.

Dear Lord I feel so lonely. I long for someone to comfort me. Sometimes I feel as if I have no strength to carry on. Please be close to me now. Please let me feel your touch. Let me breathe in your peace. Please bring me some light and joy this day. Through Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen

For when you are sorry.

Lord I am sorry for the times when I have been hasty or unkind, thought or acted selfishly, failed to forgive or ask forgiveness, forgotten your presence, taken your love for granted. I thank you for your promise to forgive all those who turn back to you in penitence. Amen

For Friends and Family Life.

Our Father, We thank you for your love and for your many blessings, especially for the precious gift of each other. Help us to show our gratitude by loving each other as you love us. Make us understanding and patient with one another, quick to admit our failings and ask forgiveness, generous in sharing the joy and strength we can give each other. Amen

For Parents.

Dear Lord We thank you for the continuing help and support of our parents. We ask your blessing on them as they grow older. May we show them love, kindness and consideration. May we benefit from their wisdom and experience. Help us to give them time in our busy lives and to continue to share with them the little experiences and conversations that mean so much.  Amen

Father We give you thanks for the memory of our parents. We thank you for their steadfast love for us, for their generosity and self  sacrifice. Forgive us if we failed while they were still with us, to show them the love that we felt or if we neglected or made little of them. May they know now of our appreciation and love as we build our own lives on the foundation of the example they left for us.  Amen

For Children.

Heavenly Father On this special day, We praise you for our children. Surround them with your blessing, that they may know your love. Please cherish them  and protect them and keep them safe from harm. Fill their life with love and laughter and let them know your goodness all their days. May they learn to love all that is true.Grow in wisdom and strength and, in due time, come through faith to the fullness of your grace. This we ask in your name. Through Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen

Everyday.

There is no place where God is not. Wherever I go, there God is. Now and always He upholds me with his power, and keeps me safe in His love. Amen

Collect for Grace.

O Lord, our heavenly Father, almighty and everlasting God, who has safely brought us to the beginning of this day: Defend us in the same with thy mighty power; and grant that this day we fall into no sin, neither run into any kind of danger; but that we, being ordered by thy governance, may do always what is righteous in thy sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.
Your Kingdom come, your will be done,
on earth as in heaven
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours.
Now and for ever.  Amen
