FoSB Songs from the Trenches
9th November 2017
As the annual time of Remembrance approaches, the renowned John Kirkpatrick returns to St. Botolph’s Church, Grimston to perform a kitbag of songs from the World Wars in a programme that highlights two different kinds of material. As you would expect, there’ll be a fair old smattering of the popular hits of the day – designed to keep our spirits high, to raise a smile, share a chorus and provide a moment’s respite from the horrors on every side, and to find the heart to keep going. Threaded through these, John will also be airing some of the songs sung on the Front Line by the service personnel themselves - tunes wedded to new words, conjured up far from home by an army of ordinary folk doing their best to be good soldiers. You’ll hear how experiences on the front were dealt with and described with great directness, wit, robust humour and occasionally fruity language.

John’s previous performances at St. Botolph’s of ‘The Victorian Farmer’s Year in Song’ and ‘Carolling and Crumpets’ proved to be hugely popular. Now this exceptional entertainer marshals his resources into a stirring new programme engagingly presented with his usual panache, energy and passion. Producing an alarming amount of volume for one person, John fills the room with a voice of great dynamic range and power, supported by his sparkling squeezebox playing.

This is a heart- warming show, with occasional poignant moments in amongst the jolly choruses, celebrating the comradeship and spirit that allowed those previous generations to Keep Smiling Through.

‘Tunes from the Trenches’ takes place at St. Botolph’s Church, Gayton Road, Grimston, PE32 1BG on Thursday, November 9th, starting at 7.30pm.

On the door £10 for members, £12 for non- members or non- members can pre-book for £10 via 01553 630301 or email including refreshments. All are welcome. Proceeds are in aid of Friends of St. Botolph’s.
